Marina Bay (Central)

Marina Bay (Central): Flying Dragon in the Sky

Marina Bay and Marina Square are the fruits of labour reaped by Singapore in her efforts in land reclamation. So, is feng shui applicable to land reclamation?

Some people believe that feng shui is formed naturally and does not apply to anything madn-made. Therefore, they consider feng shui inapplicable to reclaimed lands. But I consider land reclamation in Singapore special aspect of feng shui. It is not easy to find similar examples in other countries.

In the early 1980s, construction of the Benjamin Sheares Bridge began. Owing to the project's magnificent scale, the designers earmarked two areas for land reclamation. Feng shui enthusiasts deliberated on its effect on Singapore's economic development. Why were they worried? Because these two reclaimed areas changed the original formation of double dragons emerging from the sea of Singapore River and Kallang River to lobsters frolicking in water.

Three Hotels with Unique Designs

In Marina Bay are three hotels with unique designs ¨C the fan-shaped the Oriental Singapore, the flying bird-shaped Singapore Pan Pacific Hotel and the elephant-shaped Marina Mandarin Singapore. These three hotels seemed to be searching the beach for goals. In the early stages, the reclaimed land's qi pulse was not merged with the hotel's land pulse, thus business was slack. About 10 yeas ago, the reclaimed land's scared qi started to flow freely and propelled Marina Bay towards prosperity, enabling it to give Orchard Road a run for its money.

When the first land reclamation project started, Singapore River and Kallang River laid east and west and looked like double dragons holding up a pearl. Though both appeared to be heading out to sea, the dragon heads actually turned back to hold up the pearl.

However, after land reclamation started, the landform changed completely. The uncompleted area looked like a lobster swimming out to sea. Both the Singapore River and Kallang River are closely related to the economic development if Singapore. Today, with the completion of the reclamation project, they meet at the dragons' heads, resulting in a formation known as the king dragon patrolling the sea.

A Unified Force Forming a Flying Dragon in the Sky

With the end of the reclamation project, Marina Bay, Orchard road and Shenton Way are set to combine into a powerful force, resulting in a formation called flying dragon in the sky, soaring through clouds and riding on fog.

With respect to construction, it is important to give die consideration to the aesthetics of Marina Bay as a while and tis harmonious relations with its surroundings. Ensure unity in diversity of design and avoid haphazard erection of buildings to preserve the beautiful shoreline.

It will also be ideal to construct an auspicious statue at the river mouth, like New York's stature of Liberty, the Mermaid in Copenhagen and the Merlion that used to stand guard at Singapore River. Singapore is in fact a spiritual land blessed with outstanding talents. The reclamation of land is also in accordance with the basics of feng shui.

Suntec City Mall, located in Marina Bay and built by 11 Hong Kong tycoons, is a modern used business centre equipped with many facilities such as conference and exhibition halls, offices and space for retail and leisure. The design of Suntec City resembles five fingers, with the world's largest exterior ring-shaped fountain located in the centre. Its feng shui formation is like that of a lord supporting the cooking vessel, but the cooking vessel has been changed to money.

Nevertheless, in my view, the outward flow of money water benefits others only. Just imagine, can a pair of hands hold water or clutch wealth? Recently, it is said that one will be blessed with luck and fortune if one gets wet at the fountain. This is subjective. The feng shui design of this place reveals the great difference between Singapore and Hong Kong in feng shui design. The methods of popularising feng shui are also vastly different.

No matter what, the huge tract of reclaimed land comprising Marina Bay, Marina South and Marina East is where the Western, Southern and Central Dragons emerge. As a cornerstone of Singapore's blueprint to become an outstanding Asian financial hub, a comprehensive programme should be planned and implemented, instead of leaving the development completely in the hands of foreign investors.
