Keong Saik Street (West) - Land of Chicken
Keong Saik Street and its two adjacent streets, Jiak Chuan Road and Teck Lim Street, are collectively known as a prostitute's den. Generally, people ten to avoid staying at or near such places. It is therefore interesting to find out why so many decent households choose to live in these streets.
The Story Behind These Streets
From the feng shui point of view, Keong Saik Street, Jiak Chuan Road and Teck Lim Street form the Land of Chicken. It was said that an old bull pulling a cart knocked over their mother, scurried off to the centipede's den and settled there. Chickens are the bane of centipedes, so the latter were then forced to seek refuge in another place now known as Bukit Pasoh Road.
Finally the chickens settled down in Keong Saik Street, Jiak Chuan Road and Teck Lim Street, which eventually became the land of chicken. However one must not mistake the land of chicken for the land of prostitute. These two are not in any way related.
Although the unusual chicken land has played host to several brothels, it has also produced people with great achievements, such as successful businessmen, tycoons, artists and stage performers. It is home to many well-organised and martial arts associations and even a Cantonese opera group.
Keong Saik Street derived its name from tycoon Tan Keong Saik who lived in the 19th century. His third daughter was the wife of tycoon Lee Choon Guan. The marriage between Lee and this brainy Beauty in 1900 created a big stir in Singapore's elite circles. Educated in an English school, she was the first local lady to learn driving. She was also chair women of the Singapore Chinese Women's Association.
This goes to show that this auspicious land augurs well for its residents. If you can use the landform to good advantage and manage your business with great care, your business will boom and your name will spread afar. Businesses such as beauty salons, foodcourts, souvenir stores and entertainment outlets have great business potential.
