Kallang River (South) - Five Snakes Battling a White Crocodile
Kallang River is wide and long, and is second only to the Singapore River in terms of economic value. Feng shui refers to it as five snakes battling a white crocodile or where five snakes meet
River Mouth is like the Crocodile Mouth - One Death in Every Three Years
From the feng shui point of view, it is not a smooth ride for the five tributaries meeting at the lower reaches of Kallang River because they will run into the white crocodile at the river mouth. The landform is like a huge crocodile lurking with its jaws wide open at the section of Merdeka Bridge near the sea. With such a feature there are great torrents and swirling under currents below the surface. It is especially bad when it rains on the third and 18th days of the lunar month.
My grandfather once analysed Kallang River and predicted that once every three years, a death will occur at the river. Until today, mishaps still happen because of the complicated landform and uneven riverbed. This explains why people use to say If a person jumps into the river at Nan Sheng Garden, the body will surface at Merdeka Brigde.
Mention Fire City and people will know you are referring to the famous Kallang Gas Works at Lavender Street. For more than 100 years, it contributed greatly to Singapore's development. It will be meaningful if the government can consider naming a nearby road or building Fire City to preserve its name in the annals of history.
In the early days, Kallang River was a crucial waterway and was more advanced than the Singapore River, but today it has lagged far behind the latter. Based on feng shui, the reason appears to be that Singapore River is of a carp formation. Being pure and simple, it focuses only on commercial transport. Kallang River, on the other hand, is of a five-snake formation, since these five snakes are busy fighting each other; they are unable to focus on developing their careers.
High-class residential developments can be seen sprouting on the eastern side of the mouth of Kallang River. Property prices here are rocketing sky-high as properties race to outdo each other. On top of that, several good schools nearby, heat up the competition even more. The only drawback is that the buildings are built too close to one another, thus, the residents are unable to relax. Moving to a posh address does not necessarily mean that the quality of life naturally improves; an ideal home needs to have a good environment too.
In the future, Kallang River will see the construction of high-class residential estates on both banks and a sea sports leisure centre. However, while enjoying the facilities we must also remember the strong underwater currents at the mouth of Kallang River and to steer clear of its eddy.
