Serangoon (East)

Serangoon New Town - Lone Phoenix Heading for the Sun

Serangoon's Chinese name means dragon's mound', but in feng shui Serangoon is actually a phoenix's mound. Many may wonder why this fact is not reflected in its Chinese name. The reason is that its Chinese name was translated directly from the Malay word serangoon.

Serangoon Road is a very long road, stretching from Kandang Kerbau (Tekka) to the end of Hougang. Due to its length, this road is divided into sections. It starts from Kandang Kerbau (also called Little India), and then proceeds to Bendemeer, Potong Pasir, Serangoon and then to Hougang. The famous Serangoon Garden is located near Serangoon New Town, Many upper-income residential estated are situated alone Serangoon Gardon and Lorong Chuan. Most of the residents here are highly educated intellectuals and professionals.

Teochews Are Fond of Phoenixes

So why should the name Serangoon be changed to mean phoenix's mound? In the early days, the Teochew clan's business arm, Ngee Ann Kong Si, spotted this land with the one phoenix heading for the sun formation. They were very pleased as the Teochews had a great love for the phoenix, stemming from the fact that back in their homeland, their prefectural city was named Fengchen (Phoenix City).

Phoenix land is yin and benefits the female. The feng looks for a huang to be its companion. Likewise, to make a perfect match a noble woman should be paired up with a field commander. Phoenix land produces a lot of intelligent woman. Do not be fooled by their frail appearances; what you cannot see is their quiet dignity.

It is not only the women of the phoenix land who have impressive and dignified manners, the men have also likewise been influenced and are refined, manly and meticulous. Hence, the men need to take up more sports and group activities to enhance their manliness.

According to my feng shui assessment, the ground here is blood red in colour, the soil sticky and the force still very strong. So residents can live here without any worries. As for windfalls, these will happen every now and then, but the winnings will not be spectacular.

The phoenix land is suitable for those in the culture, education and military fields. As for business, it is advisable to concentrate on high-quality products that cater to professionals. When choosing the colour schemes of your home, it is best to use soft colours like pastel blue. Keep to simple decorations that convey a sense of stability. White Crane Spreading Its Wings

In the art of feng shui, Serangoon Central and its neighbouring area has the one and only white crane stretching its wings formation in Singapore. Both the phoenix and the crane are precious birds. The crane is the fairy in the bird family, and is often featured in fairytales carrying a deity on its back. Riding a crane is as prestigious as travelling in an expensive car. Cranes are graceful and independent, so a crane land is considered as exquisite land. Residents of the crane land should set big goals in order to be outstanding.

A crane is also a symbol of longevity, and this is especially so for women living on a crane land. For men, the crane land will benefit career development.

A crane land benefits those in fields like design, religion, culture, advertising, furniture, communication and transport. With the support of the crane land, businessmen should set up branches of franchises overseas. If the children's school results are good and the parents can afford it, the children should be sent overseas to further their studies.

Cranes are precious creatures, hence married women living here should try to give birth to more children as these children will eventually benefit from this crane land.

Serangoon Garden - Imperial Scholar Perusing a Scroll

Serangoon Garden (formerly called Angsali), is a famous feng shui estate in Singapore and should not be left out. In the early days, Angsali was a very famous estate with a large number of successful English-educated residents. It also had a high concentration of people holding PhDs, Master and Bachelor degrees, teachers, principals and other professionals. A large number of residents also pursued higher education overseas.

The Higher You Climb, the Harder You Fall

According to feng shui, Serangoon Garden has an imperial scholar perusing a scroll or imperial scholar editing a scroll formation. This is a valley, but its gourd-like shape does not constitute a complete formation and the landform is similar to that of a large palace with numerous inner courtyards. Hence, some call it Solitary Inner Palace.

In ancient times, imperial scholars were a group of specially selected scholars serving the emperor. Each philosopher specialised in a particular field. They held high posts because they worked closely with the emperor and accompanied him in his studies.

This imperial scholar perusing the scroll formation in Singapore is rather special. Its overall layout looks like an ancient bamboo scroll.

There is a saying that accompanying the emperor is like accompanying a tiger. The imperial scholar, being the emperor's personal official, would be in for a hard time if he served a temperamental emperor. As such, residents in this estate should pay special attention to what they do and follow the rules. Never turn to risky business. For those who prefer a shortcut to success be warned, the higher you climb, the harder you will fall.

Upper Serangoon Road - Golden Fowl Perched on Lotus

Along Upper Serangoon Road, just after Upper Serangoon Shopping centre (formerly known as Hougang 5th milestone), you will notice the many temples and churches standing at attention along both sides of this road. We can certainly say every five steps bring us to a temple and every 10 steps to a church. Set among these temples and churches are luxurious bungalows.

The reason for this unusual arrangement is that this is a golden fowl perched on lotus land which is different from the normal fowl land. Moreover, the presence of the celestial crane and the nearby lands of the phoenix, deer and mandarin duck enhance it. On top of that, the golden fowl is standing on the lotus, a very rare situation indeed.

The golden fowl is proud by nature and sticks to a vegetarian diet - it takes great pride in tis purity. To Taoists, the golden fowl wields authoritative power, but in feng shui, this land is conducive not only to business, but also religious activities. However, both need to support one another in order to prosper forever.

Land of Golden Egg - Great Food Fortune

The golden egg is thee most precious gem in the golden fowl land. The golden egg is bound to be near clear and sweet flowing water and egg-shaped pebbles in white or gold.

If by chance you come across a golden pebble, treasure it. To be able to live on a piece of golden if land is indeed very lucky, and residents will prosper. It is also believed that if temples are built on a golden egg land, prayers will be answered.

The Golden Fowl land benefits those dealing in business related to the metal element, such as jewellery and metals, or the fire element. Hence, it is not surprising that some of Singapore's most successful jewellery business men gain fame and fortune here.

A word of advice for residents: after you have prospered, do not flirt or indulge in debauchery or your fortunes will be depleted.

How are the golden fowl and lotus lands related? Actually, Hougang is a paired lotus land and beside it is an exclusive residential area with a mandarin duck formation. A horned chestnut floats by and, together with the golden fowl, creates a formation that has turned this area into prosperous land.

The golden fowl is to be found on the lotus, but it likes to play with water. Residences here will benefit from having ponds, be they big or small. The most favourable colours for this area are blue, white and gold, while yellow and cream should be avoided.

Chipped Ingot - Do Not Be Greedy

Let's proceed to Serangoon North's residential estate. It is not a big estate but has good feng shui, and is called the floor full of ingots land. There are many ingot lands in Singapore. Though this estate's ingot is not very big, it has a huge sphere of influence. Unfortunately this ingot is chipped, hence, though the fortune of tis residents is rather good it is not very potent. To make up for this flaw, residents should do more good deeds, donate to charity and use their wealth wisely.
